Taking Sides

Bokeh

Over the years I have been extremely interested in bokeh/abstract/blurred photography. A photo professor introduced me to Uta Barth and it changed my life. Well —it changed the way I approach art and photos. I immediately began researching and studying other artists (also check out: Sarah Charlesworth and Richard Misrach) I have been unhappy with most of my endeavors thus far, but decided to share these two pieces. I enjoy the psychological aspects of the medium.

Cancer

Events that happen in life or even news that events may happen can change our lives immediately. Disease can deepen our compassion and death heightens our love and understanding. I believe in G-d. I believe G-d exists in the form of love and compassion.

Sometimes news is handed to us like a snowstorm. We shovel our way out just to slip and slide back into our homes. This is the sort of news that I have been handed. This news is changing the way I understand people and the way I understand G-d.

In this photograph, the cycles of rebirth are in limbo; resting on the tarp of fate and health, without knowing or understanding what lies underneath. Life hovers naked behind and above this small mass, while bits of life poke up from the surrounding surface.

equal protection

Earlier this fall I was driving to work when I saw this man at an anti health care rally. How perfect that this man, who is against providing health care to the needy –is holding an umbrella (protection/power) and holding a sign that refers to his God? While this man stays under his umbrella others hold their breath.

man v woman

I was shooting a family portrait this summer and this scene kept catching my eye. The yellow boat sits slightly above the red in a masculine v. feminine aesthetic (red as traditional marker for man, yellow woman). There is certainly a lot more going on here, which is why I enjoy this shot. Interestingly, I found out later that the red boat belongs to the wife.
